Baylor Dining and Facility Services are seeking a proactive approach to provide vision and leadership in response to environmental stewardship for the Baylor community. In an effort to become more sustainable and embrace our social responsibility we are actively engaging in the following initiatives:

Dining Services Sustainability Policy

  • We participate in a national waste reduction program, Recycle Mania. This  recycling accounts for approximately 160 tons of waste being diverted from the landfill per year - CLICK HERE to get information on how the competition ran this year.
  • Introduce "Eco to-go" reusable takeout program eliminating Styrofoam
  • Go tray-less campus wide to promote waste minimization and water conservation
  • Recycle cardboard, cans, office paper, printer cartridges, computer and electronic equipment, plastics and aluminum cans
  • Purchase EPA compliant, Green Seal Certified, decomposable/recycled products when possible
  • Use only recycled copy paper and Forest Stewardship Council certified stationary
  • "Duplex print" utilizing both sides of paper and send mail electronically when possible to minimize paper waste
  • Turn off office/work area lights when not being used for more than two hours and electronic equipment when not in use for more than four hours
  • Host sustainable lunch or dinner stations each semester
  • Recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans and recyclable plastics at the SUB, Atrium Cafe and Java City @ Moody Library
  • Provide recycling containers at catering events
  • Transition to all decomposable paper products to eliminate Styrofoam
  • Utilize environmentally friendly trash can liners
  • Support an organic herb garden at the new McMullen Faculty Center
  • Identify and serve sustainable, locally grown, organic, and vegan items at each residential restaurant
  • Articulate planning system to reduce delivery truck cycle and carbon emissions
  • Reduce landfill refuse through the use of pulverizing kitchen equipment
  • Shut down kitchen equipment during non-operating periods
  • Use computerized energy reduction ware-washing program in three residential locations and new McMullen Faculty Center
  • Approved coffee grounds are collected from our dining locations and are used for composting at local worm farms in partnership with World Hunger Relief, Inc.
  • Cooking grease and oils are collected for bio-diesel research
  • An average of 700 pounds of lead, Ni-Cad and Li-ion batteries are recycled per quarter
  • Truett Seminary is a pilot site for a structure embracing leadership in energy and environmental design. The building will use less energy, water, and natural resources and improve the indoor environment and uncover operating inefficiencies
  • Eco-friendly detergents and chemicals are used in the dining locations
  • Organic menu items and Eco-friendly paper products made from recycled materials are used in the residential restaurants
  • Sustainable seafood products are offered in the residential restaurants
  • Toner and printer cartridges are collected at various campus sites and picked up for recycling
  • Green tipped florescent light tubes are properly disposed of
  • Discarded machinery and other metal products are recycled at a local metal recycler
  • Shredded tree limbs and other gardening refuse are collected for compost and reused in the campus landscape
  • We purchase energy efficient commercial kitchen appliances (Energy Star Rated) where applicable
  • Proper disposal of computer, cell phone and electronic equipment for recycling
  • Compostable, non-Styrofoam, paper cups in the Student Union Building
  • Fair Trade Coffee and Rain Forest coffees are offered in the dining facilities
  • Residential restaurants are using EPA compliant pizza boxes, dinner boxes and napkins
  • Eco-friendly hand towel and bathroom tissue products are used in the residential restaurants
